Pop
music with heart and soul. That describes
soulDecision's Platinum debut No One Does
It Better.
Recorded
in Australia by the dream team of producer
Charles Fisher (Savage Garden) and engineer
Femi Jiya (Prince, Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder,
Seal), the CD is a collection of pop music
that's definitely in the groove.
Vancouver
based soulDecision is Dave Bowman (vocals),
Trevor Guthrie (vocals, guitar) and Ken Lewko
(keyboards).
With
their close harmonies, facility for upbeat
catchy pop songs and poster boy looks, it
would be easy to mistake them for just another
boy band. But you won't find these boys practicing
their dance steps in the mirror.
"We're
a band," says Guthrie. "We play
instruments. We write our songs. We perform
them live. We produce. We don't dance. It's
hard enough to hold a guitar and try to sing
on key, let alone dance around!"
A
conversation between Guthrie and Lewko during
a programming class in college led to a casual
plan to write songs together just for fun.
Within a short time, their collaboration started
to take a more serious turn. Ken and Trevor's
friendly project had progressed to the point
where they were putting out indy singles as
"Indecision".
Soon
the two asked Dave, who had an independent
deal at the time, to join them. The fit was
impeccable. Together, the three musicians
found that their very different temperaments
and personalities meshed. The three partners
developed their sound by becoming their own
music factory: writing, arranging, recording
and producing their own records.
The
members of what was soon to become soulDecision
have a remarkable working relationship. The
bottom line is always the music.
Dave:
"We're really just about writing
cool songs. We're influenced by music
that everyone else listens to. So
if we're digging a certain sound we're
going to use those influences. But,
the bottom line for us is always a
good song."
Pop
rules on their debut album. And true
to the spirit of pop it's a collection
of songs about love and the lustful
cravings that make the world go round.
From the bouncy "Ooh, It's Kinda
Crazy" & "Stay",
to the mischievously sexy smash hit
"Faded", the romantic ballad
"No One Does It Better"
and the idealistic "Let's Do
It Right", these are songs about
love lost, won, and about to be won
(if all goes according to plan!).
And
in the wake of the recording came
a name change. After all of the work
of putting the band together, gigging,
spending endless amounts of time in
the studio working to get their songs
right, and driving across the country
in record time to find a deal, the
band recognized that there was nothing
indecisive about them. Thus soulDecision
became the band's name.

"We're
all very positive guys," says Ken. "And
I think the one thing that we can send out
to people is that if you believe in something
and you work hard, you will succeed. No matter
what obstacles come your way, you will succeed."
